The flue safely channels harmful combustion gases, like carbon monoxide, out of your home, preventing dangerous build-up inside. What a boiler flue does in your home
A modern boiler flue is a sealed pipe that carries exhaust gases from the boiler to a safe point outside. It also usually brings fresh air in for combustion through a second, outer pipe.
When it is designed and installed correctly, a flue keeps harmful gases, including carbon monoxide, away from the living space. If it is damaged, blocked or incorrectly positioned, those gases can leak back into the home instead.

To deal with this, your engineer may fit a plume management kit. This extends and redirects the exhaust outlet so that the plume rises and disperses away from windows, doors and walkways while still meeting the required clearances.
Flues in lofts, voids and boxed-in areas
Many homes have flues that run through loft spaces or behind plasterboard boxing. Regulations require that any concealed flue joints can be inspected, normally by using removable access panels or hatches.
