A boiler fault code can look confusing, but it is usually the appliance’s way of reporting that a particular operating check has failed. It does not always identify the exact faulty part, although recording the code and the symptoms can help an engineer prepare for the repair.

What a boiler fault code tells you

Modern boilers monitor areas such as ignition, water pressure, temperature, fan operation and flame detection. If a reading falls outside the expected range, the boiler may stop as a safety measure and show a code on its display.

Codes vary between manufacturers and models. For example, Vaillant boilers may use codes beginning with “F”, while Worcester Bosch boilers can display codes such as “EA” for certain flame-related issues. These examples are useful clues, not universal definitions, so the exact make and model still matter.

Record the details before resetting

Before pressing any buttons, take a moment to collect as much information as possible. A complete record can reduce delays during a boiler repair call and may help the engineer bring suitable parts or equipment.

  • Locate the display and note the full fault code, including any letters, numbers or symbols.

  • Record whether any lights are flashing and how frequently they flash.

  • Write down the boiler make and model, usually shown on the front panel or a data label.

  • Take a clear photograph of the display and pressure gauge.

Ignition and flame detection

An ignition fault means the boiler has attempted to light but has not started normally. A flame detection fault may mean the appliance cannot confirm that a safe flame is present, so it shuts down. Possible causes include fuel supply issues, ignition components, sensors or the flue system, all of which need assessment by a qualified engineer.

You can check whether other gas appliances are working, provided it is safe to do so, but do not repeatedly attempt ignition. If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply if you know where the emergency control valve is, open doors and windows, avoid electrical switches and contact the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Low system pressure

A low-pressure code is common on sealed central heating systems. Check the pressure gauge when the system is cool and compare it with the range stated in the boiler manual, often around 1 to 1.5 bar, but do not assume this applies to every model.

If the manual explains how to repressurise the system, you may follow those instructions carefully. If the pressure keeps falling, there may be a leak or another fault, so arrange an engineer rather than repeatedly topping it up.

Fan, flue and overheat faults

Fan or flue codes can indicate that the boiler is not safely removing combustion gases or proving the correct airflow. Overheat codes may appear when water temperature becomes too high, perhaps because of circulation, sensor or system issues.

These are not homeowner repair tasks. Do not block, alter or dismantle the flue, and do not remove the boiler case. A Gas Safe registered engineer must inspect safety-critical components and confirm that the appliance can operate safely.

Safe checks you can make

Some basic observations may be useful before help arrives. You can check the pressure reading, confirm that the electrical supply has not been switched off and, where accessible from ground level, look at the external condensate pipe.

In cold weather, a frozen condensate pipe can sometimes stop a condensing boiler from operating. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for thawing it safely, using warm water rather than boiling water, and only reset the boiler once after the pipe has been dealt with. If the code returns, stop resetting and book a repair.

Do not investigate inside the casing, adjust gas settings, test wiring or attempt to repair a fan, sensor, pump or flue. If there is a persistent fault, unusual smell, leaking water, carbon monoxide alarm or concern about safe operation, switch the boiler off if appropriate and seek professional advice.

What to tell your heating engineer

When you contact an engineer, provide the full code and photograph rather than a shortened description such as “the boiler is broken”. Explain when the fault began, whether it happens during heating or hot water demand and whether the boiler has been reset already.

Also mention pressure changes, dripping pipes, banging or humming sounds, recent power cuts, frozen weather and any work carried out on the heating system. Clear information helps the engineer decide whether the issue may need a routine visit or a faster response.
